Stress
Stress by definition is the body's non-specific response to any demand placed upon it. Contrary to popular belief, it is not caused only by negative or adverse influences. A body under stress experiences an increased rate of wear and tear.

Stress is a necessary part of life. However, when we do not successfully recognize, divert or process the stressors that affect us, our body's reaction becomes a negative and goes into a phase called the "Fight or Flight Syndrome." During this phase of distress, certain physiological changes begin to take place. The heart beats faster from increased adrenaline production and more blood flows into the larger muscles. The functions of the immune and digestive systems are inhibited.

If the source of the stress is not counteracted, after a period of time the person experiences the disease phase, sometimes related to frustration: the inability to change an aggravating situation. Due to a suppressed immune and digestive system, the normal functioning of the body is out of balance. We sometimes say, "We are run-down and have caught a bug." In essence we are describing a person who has been in the disease phase of stress for too long.


Stress and Massage Therapy
Massage Therapy can be beneficial for relieving stress-related symptoms. This occurs for many reasons, but primarily as a result of the following: The Relaxation Response may be induced by massage. This reverses the damaging physiological effects of distress resulting in a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, improved circulation to internal organs, and warmer skin temperature. This also promotes a feeling of well-being and a reduction in anxiety.

office pressureMuscular Relaxation occurs during massage as circulation to tight muscles is increased and the pain associated with chronic tension is relieved. Increased circulation brings more oxygen and nutrients needed for relaxation to muscles, and helps rid congested areas of metabolic wastes. Decreased pain results from normalized circulation and the release of the body's own pain killers (endorphins) during massage. These factors allow chronically tight muscles to loosen while also calming the nerves. Massage helps eliminate the "knots" often found in tense shoulders and necks.

Because it induces general and muscular relaxation, massage produces a break in the accumulation of stress-related symptoms. The negative effects of prolonged stress are reduced as the body and mind return to a more normal resting state for a time before confronting stressors that are sure to come in modern living. Massage helps to reconnect our body and mind, thus promoting their function as an efficient, balanced and productive unit. With increased awareness of the relaxed physical and mental state, an out-of-balance or distressed condition is more readily detected, and can be corrected before it builds for too long.
